Possible Design for a Short-Term PM2.5 Control Combining Meteorological Factors with Filtering Technology in Beijing

[Abstract] PM2.5 has been one of the major
environmental problems in Beijing and many other urban in China, but the
solutions that had been put into practice were not sufficient. According to
meteorological analysis and the trend of recent climate changes, the problem is
most likely to deteriorate in foreseeable future. However, a thorough cure,
without major impacts on China’s economy and the lives of millions, is very
hard to find. Even if such a cure is found, it may take at least decades to
exert a significant effect.This paper shows that it is feasible to control the
PM2.5 pollution with a short-term treatment before a thorough cure becomes
effective. Natural winds are indicated to have a considerable influence on
PM2.5 concentration in Beijing. Specifically, north wind, being strongest in
winter, significantly lowers PM2.5 level, while calm wind and south wind
increase it respectively by accumulating the pollutant and by bringing emissions
from industrial regions. With the aid of filtering facilities located at the
south-east of Beijing, PM2.5 gathered by north wind can be collected and thus
prevented from re-diffusion, and pollutant brought by south wind can be
blocked. The research also made theoretical estimations of PM2.5 local
production rate, transportation rate and minimum air filtering efficiency.
[摘要] PM2.5 已经成为影响北京和中国很多城市空气质量的主要污染源,但现在为止很难找到有效的解决方案。根据气象分析未来大气的变化趋势还有可能加剧这一污染现象。然而由于牵扯到很多人的生活和各方面的利益,对这一污染的淡彻底根治很难付诸实施。即使是找到了治理办法至少需要十年以上才会产生有效的变化。本文认为在彻底根治PM2.5的方法被找到之前,短期治理行为是有必要的。考虑到自然风向对PM2.5水平有显著的影响,当强劲的北风控制北京时雾霾指数明显降低,而当北京受南风控制或者气团运动平缓时PM2.5浓度增加。本文从理论上假设在北京东南部设立一个屏障,则西北风吹来的污染会被吸附在屏障上防止二次污染,而且该屏障还可以阻隔南风带来的污染。本文根据PM2.5的排放量和传播速度对该方法治理雾霾的效果做了推演和计算。

该论文作为大一新生的研究,具有较高的完成质量。论文结构完整,涉及提出科学问题、到提出解决方法、设计实验验证、理论和实验结果结合加以讨论等各个环节,具有体系性。英文写作流畅,可读性较强。
限于作者的知识体系,这篇论文也具有较明显的缺点。首先是利用“水”的实验验证“气”被滤膜过滤的效率,得到的结果是不成立的;其次论文的结构仍具有修改的空间。
从题目要求-“与环境相关的英文论文”-来衡量,该论文虽然在科学上有瑕疵,但在衡量成绩上不应计入。对于这种利用简单实验来实证科学问题的尝试,我个人认为是值得表扬的。
